Green Computing

Green computing is the term used to denote efficient use of resources in computing environments. This term generally relates to the use of IT resources in conjunction with minimizing environmental impact, sustaining economic viability and ensuring social responsibility. Green computing is related to other similar movements like reducing the use of environmentally hazardous materials, promoting the use of recyclable materials, minimizing use of non-biodegradable components, and encouraging use of sustainable resources.

Some easy to implement green computing practices:

  a) using more energy efficient monitors like LCDs instead of traditional CRT monitors

  b) enabling "sleep" settings on PCs/laptops/printers

  c) powering down your PCs, laptops, and monitors at the end of the work day

Need to get a quick picture of the impact and costs associated with leaving PCs turned on? Check out the on-line Energy Savings Calculator. Select the US flag (on the left), enter the number of PCs you have at the top, and then click the right side GO button.
